Summary It is dark on the way to the school, and Cecil Jacobs jumps out and frightens Jem and Scout. The pageant nears its start and all of the children go backstage. Scout, however falls asleep and consequently misses her entrance. She runs onstage at the end, prompting Judge Taylor and many others to burst out laughing. Scout is accused for ruining the pageant and she feels very ashamed. So she and Jem wait at the backstage until the crowd is gone to make their way to home. On the way back home, Jem hears noises behind him and Scout. They think it must be Cecil Jacobs trying to frighten them again, but when they call out to him, they hear no reply. They reached the road when their pursuer begins running after them. Jem screams for Scout to run, but in the dark, hampered by her costume, she loses her balance and falls. She feels someone hitting her. Then, she feels Jem removing the attacker from scout and pushing her to street. Later, scout hears Jem and someone struggling and hears Jem screaming. She tries to find Jem, but she can’t because it is too dark. She stumbles toward home, and sees, in the light of the streetlamp, a man carrying Jem toward her house. Scout reaches home, and Aunt Alexandra goes to call Dr. Reynolds. Atticus calls Heck Tate, telling him that someone has attacked his children. Alexandra removes Scout’s costume, and tells her that Jem is only unconscious, not dead. Dr. Reynolds then arrives and says that he has broken arm. The man who carried him home is in the room, but she does not recognize him. Heck Tate appears and tells Atticus that Bob Ewell is lying under a tree, dead, with a knife stuck under his ribs. JEM FINCH Jem is slowly growing independent young man. He is Scouts older brother and even though they fight a lot they both mean the best for each other. In chapter 28 when Jem is attacked by Bob Ewell, he fights back and defends his sister; this shows that Jem is very brave and courageous because he knows whats important and tries his hardest even when the situation might seem difficult to get out of. SCOUT FINCH Scout is the main character of the book and the narrator as well. She is the daughter of Atticus Finch, and even though she is only 9, she understands many deep intellectual points that most full grown adults cannot completely comprehend. She is not prejudice at all and is very innocent throughout the whole entire book. In chapter 28 after the attack, she tries to remember what happens, and even though she was mad at Jem for acting so smart recently, he cares about him so much and wants to know if he is ok. ATTICUS FINCH Atticus is the father of both Jem and Scout, his wife dies at an early age, and both kids have not known her for long. Atticus is a lawyer, and at the time, he defends Tom Robinson, a black man that apparently raped Bob Ewell's daughter. Atticus is very understanding and is one of the few people in the whole County that has an open mind and knows what's right and wrong. In chapter 28 when Atticus finds out about Bob Ewells death, and that both his kids were hurt, he immedietly calls a doctor and tries to get them to tell what happened. BOB EWELL Bob is a self centered cowardly man that lives like a pig and blames everyone for his sorrows. He is very rude and is always talking back, making mean jokes about important matters. In chapter 28, Bob attacks Jem and Scout on their way back from the Halloween Fair because he was upset about the results the town had to him winning the Tom Robinson Case, in the end, after all the struggle, Bob is found dead under a tree with a knife in his ribs. AUNT ALEXANDRIA Aunt Alexandria is throughout almost the whole book known as an old-fashioned snob that only cares about family power and respect. She is constantly looking down on Negroes and on Scout as well because of the way she acts and dresses. In chapter 28 though, when Scout and Jem come back home, both hurt and scared, Aunt Alexandria, without even a word, hands Scouts he over-all's and takes care of her, this shows that she is starting to understand what Scout wants, and that for a women to only where dresses is not a necessity.
